Hughston Clinic Makes Large Donation
Columbus, Georgia – April 26, 2005: Hughston
Orthopaedic Hospital and 13 surgeons have joined forces to make
a $217,000 donation to help build the new National Infantry Museum
and Heritage Park.
The gift, presented by Hughston CEO Don Avery at
a news conference Tuesday, is in honor of Dr. Jack Hughston, who
died in September. Dr. Hughston founded the clinic in 1949 and was
considered a pioneer in the field of sports medicine. He was a lifelong
supporter of the military.
The fund raising effort was spearheaded by Hughston
Chief of Staff Dr. Carlton Savory, who was an Infantry officer in
Vietnam before becoming a doctor. He retired as a colonel in 1987,
but was recalled to duty several years later during Operation Desert
Storm.
In accepting the gift, National Infantry Foundation
Chair MG (R) Jerry White said, "This is the first time we've
seen co-workers come together to make a major contribution. We hope
it will inspire others to join the effort, too."
The $217,000 donation included $50,000 from Hughston
Orthopaedic Hospital. The rest came from doctors Robert McAlindon,
Champ Baker, Thomas Bernard, Kenneth Burkus, John Dorchak, Patrick
Fernicola, Fred Flandry, Crow Gudger, Kurt Jacobson, David Rehak,
Carlton Savory, John Waldrop and Thomas Walsh.
Dr. Savory also announced the inaugural event of
the Hughston Leadership Lecture Series. LTG (R) Hal Moore, who co-wrote
We Were Soldiers Once...and Young, is the featured speaker at the
May 3 event. The intent of the series, Savory said, is to raise
awareness of the museum project.
The Foundation is now more than halfway toward
its project goal of $75 million. Work is underway on the Heritage
Park portion of the project, and when more funds become available,
construction will begin on the museum.
