Lieutenant General Tom Fields retired from active duty in October 1994 after concluding over 34 years of service with the United States Army.

He was commissioned in the Infantry in June 1960 after graduating from The Citadel. He commanded at every level from platoon to Commanding General, 6th Infantry Division (Light) from 1988-1990.

LTG Fields’ career included service with airborne, airmobile, light and mechanized infantry, and Special Forces. He served two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam with the 1st Calvary Division and 101st Airborne Division (AM).

During Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, General Fields was the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Department of the Army. He oversaw the mobilization and deployment of all Army forces to the theater and authored the Army plan for redeployment, demobilization and reconstitution of forces following the conflict.

General Fields’ last active duty assignment was as Deputy Commander in Chief/Chief of Staff in the United States Pacific Command. He served as Commander in Chief, Pacific during much of the North Korean nuclear crisis in the summer of 1994.

General Fields has written and lectured extensively on military strategy, doctrine and training to include presentations at Harvard University, Tufts University, Princeton University, University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, Haverford College and the Brookings Institution. He also served on the Chief of Staff Army’s greybeard panel for high-risk training.

His awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Meal (1OLC), Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device (4OLC), Air Medal, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC), and Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, plus foreign and unit awards. He is a master parachutist and is a Ranger, Pathfinder, and Special Forces qualified.

Since retirement, General Fields has been an independent consultant specializing in the areas of concepts and requirements.
