Judge Aaron
Cohn
Presiding Judge of Juvenile Court of The
Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit
|
Born in Columbus, Georgia, March 3, 1916; educated
in public schools of Columbus; graduate of Columbus High School
(1932); graduate of University of Georgia Lumpkin School of Law
(1938); and, admitted to the Bar in 1938. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant
Cavalry, 1937.
He volunteered for the United States Army in the
summer of 1940. He entered the service as a Lieutenant and separated
from the service in 1946 as Lieutenant Colonel, Cavalry; was Combat
Operations Officer of the 3rd U.S. Cavalry in General Patton’s
Army in four (4) major campaigns in Europe, i.e., Northern France,
Central Europe, Ardennes and Rhineland, and was decorated for same.
(In 1978 he was cited by the City of Bettembourg, Luxemburg, for
his service in the liberation of Luxemburg while with the 3rd Armored
Cavalry Regiment.) (In 1982 he was honored by the United States
Holocaust Memorial Commission as an Official Liberator of the Concentration
Camp at Ebensee, Austria in 1945.) Retired from the United States
Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel after 27 years service, active
and inactive. Graduated from Infantry School, Command and General
Staff College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and attended
Cavalry School. He resumed the practice of law in 1946.
He was married June 19, 1941 to the former Janet
Ann Lilienthal, and they have three children.
In 1983, Georgia Legislators, both the Senate and
House of Representatives, passed resolutions honoring and commending
him for his distinguished service to the State of Georgia; and he
was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Merit Award awarded
annually to two or three distinguished alumni of the University
of Georgia.
APPOINTED: Judge of Juvenile Court of Columbus,
Muscogee County, Georgia, on January 1, 1965; was formerly Senior
Partner of the Law Firm of Cohn & Cohn, P.C., Columbus, Georgia,
where he practiced law with his son, Leslie L. Cohn.
RECENT AWARDS:
In 2000, Judge Cohn was selected by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
newspaper as one of the 100 "Citizens to Remember During the
20th Century."
In 2001, CORTA (Columbus Regional Tennis Association)
honored him by naming an award in his name to “The Most Deserving
Juvenile For Sportsmanship” because of his conducting tennis
clinics for young people through the years without compensation.
On May 27, 2003, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop,
Jr. presented him with a “Certificate of Special Congressional
Recognition” in recognition of outstanding achievement, service
and distinction.
On May 27, 2003, he was presented the most prestigious “The
Livingston Citizen-Soldier of the Year” award by the Association
of the United States Army (AUSA), for his contributions to the Army
during World War II, while serving in the 3rd Cavalry regiment of
the 3rd U.S. Army under General George Patton, and for his contributions
and service to the community from the time he returned home to date.
On November 3, 2003, The Georgia Council of Juvenile
Court Judges gave a banquet in his honor for his 40 years of service
within the Juvenile Judicial Courts for youth in the State of Georgia.
At that time he received the “Amicus Curiae” award of
the Supreme Court of Georgia, and also Resolutions from the Court
of Appeals of Georgia and the Superior Court of the Chattahoochee
Judicial Circuit.
On April 1, 2004, the House of Representatives
passed a Resolution in recognition of his lifetime of service, the
regional youth detention center, currently under construction in
Midland, Georgia, is designated as the “Aaron Cohn Regional
Youth Detention Center.
